The economic conundrum of EV battery recycling is a pressing issue that threatens to leave salvage yards with unwanted batteries and society with hazardous waste. The challenge lies in the fact that while EV batteries are valuable sources of minerals like nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium, the cost of shipping and processing them often outweighs their scrap value. This is particularly true for newer lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are cheaper to produce but present unique recycling challenges. As a result, salvage yards are often left with batteries that are either worthless or a costly liability. This problem is expected to worsen as more EVs hit the road and battery technology evolves. The situation is further complicated by the fact that responsible recyclers may be reluctant to take on the risk of old batteries, leading to unsafe and dirty recycling practices overseas or piles of hazardous waste. Colorado has taken a proactive approach to this problem by passing a new law that holds manufacturers accountable for the end-of-life recycling of their products. This law, which extends the state's embrace of producer responsibility, serves as a backstop for salvage yards and ensures that batteries are recycled properly. The broad support for the law from industry players, including salvage yard operators, battery recyclers, and automakers, suggests that it may be a model for other states to follow in addressing the economic and environmental challenges of EV battery recycling.
