- Concourse E: Full build-out of Concourse E, with a new Washington, D.C.-themed United Club and a luxe Polaris lounge.
- Concourse D: A new Concourse D south of the current Concourse E for domestic airlines.
- Concourse B: A new regional concourse on the site of the current Concourse C-D.
United's growth at IAD is expected to be significant, with a 24% increase in seats this year compared to 2019. The airline's hub is now bigger than it was during its previous peak. The master plan includes more and better terminal facilities, with international flights moving to Concourse A and domestic flights using Concourse E and the future Concourse B.
However, the project faces challenges. The cost is steep, and without federal grants or other funding, the burden could fall on airlines and travelers through higher fees and airfares. There are also concerns about preserving Saarinen's landmark terminal, with the Trump administration's renderings showing a potential compromise to its design.
Despite these obstacles, United is excited about the plan, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is committed to maintaining the iconic architecture while transforming the interior spaces.
